Eleven seniors received the Texas Christian University Community Scholars Scholarship March 22 in the Little Theatre, making them the largest group of recipients for the program this year.

The full-ride scholarship grants each student $260,000 and the opportunity to study abroad.

Texans Talk asked the seniors a few questions about their awards.


Senior Keziah Amoasi

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means the whole world to me and it means the whole world to my parents. The fact that I get to go to college without paying is a weight off my shoulders and my parents’ shoulders.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Nursing, because I love to help people and it would be a great way to interact with people and help them.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

Working to impact my whole generation.”


Senior Thaddeus Uwalaka-Ekennia

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means big opportunities and it also means the world to me. I get to take off a burden for my parents, I get to grow more and expand my horizon. Jesus made this possible.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“I’m studying for pre-med and I’m going to be a doctor. The human body is a work of art. I want to take care of the patient first then the disease.”


Senior Grace Haisila

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“Means everything and more.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Cres [Critical Race and Ethnic Studies] or anthropology, People shape people, I want to learn about their cultures. or anthropology. People shape people. I want to learn about their cultures.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“Maybe going back and teaching a course over Pacific Islander Studies.”


Senior Raul Ozuna

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means making a difference. Not a difference in just my life, but also in my family. It means my younger sisters can do it too.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Psychology and creative writing. Psychology to help those that don’t have a support system. Creative writing is the only way to express myself.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“Hopefully, having my own practice, and hopefully being able to be in the Community Scholars Program for incoming kids.”


Senior Allen Ceballos

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“Honestly winning this will demonstrate how great is my background. I’ve always pushed forward and try to be a model for my younger siblings. This is a part of my pride and happiness that I will use to keep myself going forward in life.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“I plan on studying mechanical engineering. I have always been into mechanics and cars which have driven me to be able to build my own things and create something entirely new.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“I see myself as a successful engineer and working alongside my brother. Hopefully, I’ll be able to fall back on my leadership skills to create an impact on society.”


Senior David Truong

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“Winning this scholarship means being able to give my future children the support I lacked growing up and be able to support my future family.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“I will be studying nursing because I have previously worked with children who have mental disabilities and that melts my heart. “

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“I see myself working at a hospital for two years and going back to get my masters.”


Senior Aidan Kane

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means the world because, without it, I wouldn’t be able to get an education with my family’s income.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Music education because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Nothing else makes me happy as music and teaching.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“Teaching hopefully. I’ve spoken to a music educator and she offered me a job at B sharp and I can do that through that college if I wanted to. I might continue if I like teaching there and if not I will seek teaching at a university.”


Senior Ofuchinyelu Akpom

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means that they believe in me to go out and do something.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Comparative race and ethnic studies. I want to increase healthcare access for Spanish speakers.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“I don’t know. I don’t know how college will change me, but I do know I’ll know more Spanish.”


Senior Tania Nguyen

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It’s a chance of hope, that I get to have a future due to family history and to pay back my mom.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Engineering, mechanical or computer because I’ve always had an interest in creating and designing new innovations and helping the world progress.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“I’ll definitely come back to the community and give advice to other kids, and show them that they have a chance.”


Senior Peter Nguyen

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It means not having to worry about money not worrying about the next four years. It’s time for growth and the ability to study abroad.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“I’m uncertain, nutrition. But I’m unsure. But the main path is nutrition while I’m in college.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“I don’t know I can’t look that far into the future, but I know I’m going to be doing something that helps other people for sure.”


Senior Ayesha Djibo

What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

“It’s so amazing it proves hard work. God is good and I’m so happy for this opportunity.”

What will you study at TCU? Why?

“Nursing I might change it, but for now it’s nursing just the fact that I can help people and getting to work with sick people and who are injured and make them feel safe.”

Where do you see yourself after you graduate from TCU?

“After I graduate I see myself going back to school to get my master’s degree.”
