A SPIRIT ‘SO PURE’: REMEMBERING TEACHER REBECCA PFLEGER

By Moises Castro, Editor-in-Chief

Dane Pfleger said his mother Rebecca Pfleger always cracked jokes and she didn’t know when to stop.

She would play jokes on others all the time.

“Nana, my mom loved you and you couldn’t even explain how much she loved you,” Dane said to his grandmother during his mother’s memorial service. “There’s not more that you can say. You’re a fighter. You’ve been through it all.”

Sam Houston hosted a celebration of life ceremony in the Auditorium for Pfleger Jan. 24. She passed away Saturday, Jan. 19. She was 44 years old.

Principal Fernando Benavides said Pfleger was excited to be a teacher. She created close relationships with her coworkers and her students and that helped her become a coach her second year.

“Mrs. Pfleger was always open to do whatever needed to be done to fit the needs of our students,” he said. “She was flexible, she went with the flow. I could always ask her to do what was in the best interest of our students and our campus. She was a dedicated teacher who showed much love for her students and over the last 11 years she developed into a better teacher that was respected by her peers.”

Alumna Reva Wilson said she had the honor of being one of Pfleger ‘s students and her “third African American child.”

She said when she joined the cheerleading team that Pfleger coached, she got to know the team and she got to know Pfleger, which in turn helped her come out of her shell.

“I’m not much of a public speaker and coach Pfleger knew that, but when I was asked to speak today I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to let you guys know how much she meant to me,” Wilson said. “Her personality, y’all was just so pure, so pure. Of course I respected her as an adult, but she was also so goofy and so lovely and sometimes in the hallway when I would see her we wouldn’t even say anything. She would just look at me and we would start laughing. She always made my day.”

The family created the Rebecca Reed Pfleger Scholarship fund in her honor to benefit Sam Houston students.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the scholarship fund.
