Jan 17, 2019
Sam Houston will host a celebration of life event at 10 a.m, Saturday, Jan. 19 in the Auditorium for former teacher Judy Thomas.
Thomas graduated in 1965 as part of the first SHHS graduating class and served as a SHHS special education and social studies teacher for 39 years. After she retired in 2011 she continued to support the school by donating, substituting and was the former president for the Sam Houston Alumni Association.
Thomas died from complications of cancer cancer Jan. 5 at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. She was 71.
Science teacher Denece Newsome said Thomas loved Sam and gave it what it needed and supported the students.
“I am not sure that I have one that truly stands out because she is in too many awesome memories,” she said about her best memory of Thomas.
Principal Fernando Benavides said she was a fair and good teacher. She made sure her students in social studies were well taught and prepared for life and tests.
“You know there are a lot of memories that I would think of, you know? She was always at the games, soccer, football, basketball. She loves the Texans. She loves to see them succeed,” Benavides said. “She was a Texan through and through.”
